Biologic therapy has improved prognoses, controlled flares, minimized symptoms and overall improved the quality of life for millions of individuals affected with various diseases. Over the past decade, biologics have changed the treatment landscape of managing moderate-to-severe psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa and chronic urticaria. Before the first biologic was FDA approved for psoriasis, treatment options consisted of topical agents, phototherapy and conventional systemic agents. Our providers are up to date on these therapies and we employ a dedicated staff that is there to guide you through each step of the process including insurance coverage, cost and shipping your medication.
Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, uses a narrow band of ultraviolet (UV) light for healing effects. This disease management method has been used worldwide for nearly a century to treat chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo and severe eczema. Phototherapy is available in our Enfield office only. This is a non-invasive treatment and often requires 2 or 3 treatments per week.
Under a physician’s supervision, Levia users can employ light beam delivery attachments to deliver precise, measured and targeted ultraviolet band (UVB) light within the spectral band of 300-320 nanometers to areas of psoriasis-affected skin. This targeted UVB light used by Levia is named UVB-Select. The Levia LiteSpot is used to treat small areas anywhere on the body, while the Levia LiteBrush is designed specifically for the scalp. Levia treatments are available in our Enfield Office.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the use of photochemical reactions mediated through the interaction of photosensitizing agents, light, and oxygen for the treatment of pre-cancerous lesions and sun damaged skin. Photodynamic therapy is a 2-step procedure with a minimum of 2.5 hours between each step. In the first step, any thickened lesions will be gently scraped and the photosensitizer is applied to the site topically. You will be given a time approximately 3 hours to come back. This allows the medication to be absorbed by the cells in your targeted area. The second step involves the activation of the photosensitizer in the presence of oxygen with a specific wavelength of light directed toward the targeted area. The photosensitizing agent that was absorbed reacts with the light to destroy sun damaged tissue and pre-cancerous lesions. At our office we have two different light machines available, one blue and one red, each requiring a different amount of exposure. Regardless of the machine the outcome is the same, healthier skin.
